UICentre Director receives endowed chair
Introduction
Paul Carlier received an endowed chair named in honor of Hans W. Vahlteich. Hans was a Chicago native, the son of a pharmacist, and earned two Graduate degrees from the University of Illinois School of Pharmacy, in 1917 and 1918, respectively. As a student, early each morning he opened his father’s pharmacy, went to school, and then returned at the end of the day to work a few hours in his father’s shop. He generously donated funds for the Vahlteich Research Award, which each year supports starting faculty in the College. In 2011, his daughter Beverly Vahlteich DeLaney continued this wonderful legacy by establishing the Hans W. Vahlteich Chair in Medicinal Chemistry. This was a very generous and timely gift, enabling the College to recognize and retain faculty working on drug discovery. Carlier is the second recipient of this chair.
